The Opening Sequence redraft

After hearing the feedback that we heard in class ( Located in the comment box underneath the previous opening sequence ) we adapted our opening sequence to improve it.

The opening sequence starts off with and ext. shots of Barking Abbey School (Leisure Centre) it then dissolves to a panning of inside the leisure centre (with extras) , which then pans across the basketball court, where we have a longshot of Ricardo dribbling a basketball .The camera continues to pan through the leisure centre (with extras) into the dance studio where we have a longshot of Alison gathering her dance things together after a session alone, she will pick up a CD and on that CD we will have a credit eg.editor. There is no dialogue just a sound track playing. We cutaway to Ricardo putting his duffle bag over his shoulder this will be a meduim long shot and on his duffle bag a credit will appear e.g directors name. The camera will follow Ricardo and as he opens the sports hall door we have a cutaway shot of Alison opening the door to the dance studio and walking out into the hall way going over her dance steps. We then cut back to Ricardo as he is walking up the stairs then through the hallway we have and over the shoulder shot of him seeing Alison. The over the shoulder shot will capture Alison turining around to see Ricardo behind her. We then cutaway to a close up of Alisons face looking embarrased. We will then have the camera inside the locker so as Alison opens her locker door we see her face, as she puts her things inside her locker it will eventually block the view of the camera. We then cutaway back to the over the shoulder shot of Ricardo and as he opens his locker, the camera will cutaway to a view from inside his locker where we will see Alison walking past with a lovestuck expression on her face. As he puts his belonging in his locker it will eventually block the view of the camera again and as he slams his locker door shut the title of the film will appear.

Location reece - The location will not be changed it will still be based in Barking Abbey Leisure centre.

Soundtrack - The soundtrack still needs to be decided by we have discussed that it will be soft gentle and mellow theme to it.

Font for opening titles - Italic and possibly pink or baby blue.

The Production Meeting

My group (Esther & Edward) had a production meeting on SUNDAY THE 15th OF NOVEMBER. It was held at Esther's house at 12:15. Our first objective was to watch more teenage romance based films to inspire us with ideas, we watched the opening sequence of 'Love dont cost a thing', 'High school musical 1 2 and 3' and films such as 'Honey' and also 'Never been kissed'. After watching all these films we came to the conclusion that basing our opening sequence on the opening of High School Musical 2 will be a good idea. We liked the way the estbalishing shots were precise and set the scene clearly and we felt we could incorporate this into our opening sequence we also like the way they started the scenes in the classroom with the charecters bored waiting for time to go pass and that we could base our story around this opening.
In addition we dicussed and brainstormed different ideas such as locaton reece and music opening sequence. We also came up with the idea of doing additions for parts in our sequence. All in all it was a very sucessful meeting we discussed many issues and managed to storyboard our opening seqence and create a written version of it.

The Opening Sequence

The opening sequence starts off with and ext. shots of Barking Abbey School (Leisure Centre) it then dissolves to a panning of inside the leisure centre , which then pans across the basketball court, the dance studio then the hallway leading to the classroom. The use of establishing shots sets the scene of the film. (All the establising shots leading up until the classroom will be in black and white). We then have a meduim close up of Alison sitting in the classroom bored looking up at the clock which leads to the close up of the clock. Then music then fades out until you can just hear the clock ticking. We then cutaway to a close up of Alisons feet tapping to the beat of the clock. After a few minitues the bell goes and then the shots are in colour ( we chose for this scene to be in colour at this point to emphisise Alison coming alive after being bored in school for so many hours).
We have a longshot focusing on Alisons excitment leaving the classroom, then we have another longshot from a diagonal side view of Alison running through the corridor and Ricardo with his basketball team on the other side. They both bump into each other , there is a meduim shot of Ricoardo helping Alison pick up her stuff. Ricardos freinds hurring him up to leave and Ricardo forgets his ball , Alison kicks it and the camera follows the ball which then reveals the title scequence of the film.

Treatment 2nd Draft

Spotlight on me (New Title)

Treatment; The opening sequence starts off with Alison putting on her ballet shoes to cutaway shots of Ricardo putting on his football boots, it then goes to Alison walking through the corridor to the dance studio in the 6th form. It then cutsaway to Ricardo walking through the corridor hearing the music and peeking through the window to see Alison dancing.Ricardo is memorised by her dance moves and cant help himself so he walks in applauding her.

Alison is shocked as she has a huge crush on Ricardo because Ricardo is captain of the football team that everygirl loves, this is he first time he has ever noticed her, he goes on by saying that she is the most beautiful girl he has seen and he loves the way she moves. They continue to conversate and Alison asks him to come to the talent show, Ricardo says yes and plans to ask her out after the show.

Alison is performing with 3 other dancers for the show and they find out Ricardo is planning to ask her out after the show and are envious, but they think that if Alison perfoms badly he wont ask her out. So they come up with a plan to do a different dance routine to the one they are rehearsing with Alison without Alison knowing.

When it comes to the day of the talent show Ricardo has a front row seat and the girls get ready to perform. They come on stage and get resady to perform the stage goes dark and the spotlights are about to come on luckily for Alison her spotlight is the only on that comes on so the audience dont see the other 3 girls dancing, Once again Ricardo is mesmerised and when the music stops he runs on stage and asks her out.

Further research on teenage romance

She’s All that

She’s all that focuses on introducing the audience to the protagonist. This is shown through showing us the character in her element creating a piece of artwork. This tells us that she is a creative person. The costume that she wears is not very fashionable and is more casual suggesting that she is comfortable and doesn’t feel the need to dress up. The starting sequence is unconventional as it doesn’t start with various establishing shots, its starts off with a montage the director may have chose this as a reflection of what she was doing. The character was creating a collage which is a layering of different textures and images and a montage is a selection of shots layered and put together to emphasise passing of time and activity. The element of this opening I like most is the way the director introduced and focused on the protagonist and the type of character she represents.

Summer Catch

Summer Catch is similar to she’s all that in the sense that it introduces us to the main protagonist, each protagonist has a hobby which is made clear instantly through the use of establishing shots of the baseball field in Summer Catch. However in this case there is a narrative to help the audience understand the type of person the protagonist represents. This character is very driven by his hobbies and this is seen through the way he speaks and what he says ‘’ playing here is the chance of a lifetime’’. A convention that both opening sequences convey is the way the director introduces the protagonist doing either a hobby or being in the environment where the hobby takes place. The director also uses mis-en scene (costume) to represent the character so instantly we are aware and given clues of the type of people they are. In the case of Summer Catch the main character is wearing a vest with a baseball institution written on it.

Mad Love

Once again mad love highlights a character being shown doing something they are interested in hobby wise. We pick up clues about the narrative as the opening shows a male character watching a female character in excitement through a telescope. This happening in the first scene of the film highlights the genre which is teenage romance, it also gets the audience wondering if the two characters will end up meeting up or getting together and having the audience asking questions is a good way to get audience intrigued.

Feedback for treatment

During the lesson we presented our treatments to the class wre had to give out and take in feedback, here is the feedback my group recieved;

*The themes are clear and it is easy to see that the story is about romance however it is too extreme, teenage romances are often confortable to watch and nothing too dramatic happens however our story is full of murder and torture which is unlikely for teenage romance.

*The opening sequence jumps into the story too quickly and it needs to be broken down to not tell the story straight away.

*The ending does not make sence and the charecter has no motivation to kill herself

*The fact that Ricardo dates one of the bullies is irrelivant and should be changed.

*We need to watch more openings of teenage romance films and get more ideas before rewriting the pitch.

Treatment

Treatment for ‘Love & Pain’

Tagline;

Pitch;
Alison is a street dancer and is passionate about what she does but secretly has a crush on Ricardo, Ricardo one day watches Alison dance and instantly falls in love they get together but little do the know how much pain their love will cause.

Treatment
The film starts with an opening sequence of Alison dancing alone in a dance studio at their 6th form, the music is on loud and she thinks no one is around and gives it her all, little does she know that Ricardo is poking his head through the door memorised by her dance moves and cant help himself so he walks in applauding her.

Alison is shocked as she has a huge crush on Ricardo and this is he first time he has ever noticed her, he goes on by saying that she is the most beautiful girl he has seen and he loves the way she moves. They continue to conversate and Alison asks him to come to one of her shows, Ricardo says yes and plans to ask her out after the show.

The girls in school eventually find out about their relationship and are envious, so much so to the point where they start to bully and abuse Alison. Alison blames Ricardo for the pain that she is going thorough and cuts him out of her life without telling him why. One day the bullies take things a step too far and attack Alison to the point where she badly sprains her ankle and is unable to dance. When Ricardo asks Alsion what happened Alison has no chioce but to tell him the truth.Ricardo breaks up with Alison to stop the bullying Alison feels heartbroken as she feels that they should still be together but they cant.

Shortly after this whole ordeal Ricardo starts to date one of the bullies that attacked Alison, when Alison finds out about this she is distrought and ends up writing a suicide note on facebook and shortly after, kills herself.

Research on teenage romance movies

High School Musical

The titles are bold and appear right at the immediate start of the seqence and as the camera starts to pan on the location it gradually shows the casts names.

The music is very festive because the film starts on new years eve, the holiday season is a good time to show people falling in love as it is a time of love and people coming together.

In the opening sequence you meet the progonists both male and female Troy is a typical Jock used in typical romance films and Gabriella is a smart charecter which isnt the typical type of charecter used, however she is very pretty so the director makes it work, they are both doing a hobby they enjoy rather than enjoying the celebrations, this is one of the clues the director uses as later on in the film the comitments both these charecters have effect their relationship. Both these charecters meet at the karoke at the kids party it was like they were ment to be together as the spotlight hits at random these two charecters to sing together, when they are first on stage their body language is closed and they are very distant with each other and eye contact is rare. However, it is only when they get into the song where they start to appeal to each other, the music used is about love so already it becomes clear that these two charecters will eventually fall in love. Another major clue is that just before they start singing the guy who hands them the microphone says 'one day you'le thank my for this'
indicating that he is the one responsible for bringing them together.

This meets my expectations for a romance film opening as the various clues used are key indicators of what the narrative will be and also the male protagonist used is the typical type of charecter that the females fall in love with, in this case it is the charecter Gabriella.

Get over it

Looking at the opening sequence of get over it, it is clear with the narrative that the film is a teenage romance, the upbeat and fast paced soundtrack gives the opening a jolly and possitive vibe for the audience to engage with which makes them feel happy. It starts off with video footage from the childhood of the two protagonists helping the audience see how these charecters have developed in relationship as time passes. I think meeting the protagonists within the opening sequence is a key element to have as the audience can automatically connect with these charecters before being introduced to anyone else. When the male charecter says ' someday, somehow, fate will bring us together'it is a major clue in what is likely to happen in the narrative of the film. This may leave the audience wanting to know what is going to happen and how they will end up getting back together.
This opening sequence meets my expectations of a teenage romance film opening as it has a possitive and happy vibe to the scene it is also based in a high school this is shown through various close ups of when the pair are kissing.

In the opening of What A Girl Wants there is a butterfly included in the title sequence, this will appeal automatically to female audiences. Similarly to 'Get Over It' there narrative rather than dialogue so using narative seems to be very popular in teenage romance films. Not only is using narative a regular occurance but directors leaving clues within the dialogue is also seen in 'What a girl wants' and words like 'Fate' are heard.' Little did she know that in the deserts of Morroco fate was waiting for her'. When the word fate is heard we are introduced to the male charecters letting the audience know that the coming of these two charecters was ment to be. As we are introduced to the male charecter the music gets slower and softer adding a romantic element to the scene.Similarly to 'Get Over It' and 'High School Musical' this meets my expectations of what and teen romance opening sequence should be as the audience are intoduce into a soft atmosphere with clues of two charecters falling in love visible throughout. Also the way in which both protagonists are introduced within the opening sequence adds to my expectations as I feel it is important to meet the main charecters straight away.

Research on chosen genre

In class we had to choose in our groups a genre that we may use for our film opening. My group chose ROMANCE

A romance film can be loosely defined as any film in which the central plot (the premise of the story) revolves around the romantic involvement of the story's protagonists. Common themes include the characters making decisions based on a newly-found romantic attraction.

The most successful romantic film is the 1997 blockbuster, Titanic which made over $600 million and $1.8 billion, worldwide.

The term Chick flick is often associated with romance films as many are targeted to a female audience.

Here is an analysis of the film 50 1st dates which is a film based on ROMANCE

Bridget Jone's diary

Bridget Jone's diary is another typical romance film,in the opening few scenes it is clear to see the protagonist as she tells the audience her own story like a diary, refering back to the main target audience for romance films (women) the portagonist in this film is a woman one of which the audience can relate to.
Clues of the narrative start to become apparent when she reaches the party badly dressed and her mother tells her she has to change, we can see that the protagonist has a low self esteem and this effects how other people react to her. This statment is proven when she confronts the man that she is being set up with, he instantly becomes alienated from her because of the way she is dressed and how she carries herself, you could even say this is the reason why she is still single and alone.
The charecters used in this film in particular I feel are the typical types of charecters used in romance films, and mother and daughter and a mothers friend and son with both mothers trying to get their children to date, with the children feeling reluctant to do so, having these types of charecters help the genre of the film apparent and it reaches my expectations of a typical love story as the protagonist is a single women looking for love.

The Notebook

The Notebook is a successfull romance film realeased in 2004, the opening however is very different to most romance openings. Rather than meeting the protagonsits straight away we meet other charecters in an old people's home who eventually go on to tell the love story. The opening titles show the camera panning over a typical romantic location, a river during its sunrise/set. However it does not make the movie apparent that it is about love although the music is very gentle and mellow it just gives the audeince a feeling of serenity and calmness.
It is only when the old man starts to read the story that we become aware of a guy called Noah who sees a girl he finds attrative. Narrative clue then start to show as we know Noah is trying to win this girls heart and the film will most likely be about how he does so.
