the title of our film which is called 'Spotlight on Alison' our titles will be based around the idea of a spotlight, so there will be a black background, then, a spotlight will appear and in that spotlight a title will appear, the typograpthy will be based around the romance theme therefore it will be stylised italicaly and the shade of pink or red will have to compliment the shade of the spotlight.

Here are a few I created, my group members Esther and Edward have also created some of their music research in my group and Edward was in charge of opening titles research whilst Esther worked on the picture 1st scene with music, due to the fact our sequence is based on romance we need to look for music to suit this element. Also, we have to pick the music carefully because music can piece our whole sequence together and set the atmosphere. The music also has to be copyright free.

Before choosing the music, I researched looking at different romance films and the music in which they used.

Here are a few examples.

In Enchanted, the music starts off very magical and fairy talelike however futher on the protagonist starts to sing a song about finding her true loves kiss which sets the romantic element of the film, it also gives the clues of what the narrative may be about.
I feel that finding and using a song with lyrics may enhance our sequence and it will help tell the story a little bit more.

The Princess diaries

The opening seqence starts off with establishing shots of the city and city life, however the music accompanying it is very mellow soft and romantic, so it is a contrapuntal sound from the images we see, i think this is a very clever idea because although we can see the city we can here a romanctic soundtrack which helps the audience identify the genre.

When we are then introduced to the charecter the music changes;
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"SuperGirl"
Written by krystal harris, J. Morant and Jimmy Harry
Performed by krystal harris
Courtesy of KBNHA Records

It is a song with lyrics with a rock based element; i feel this type of music got used not only to portray the charecters personality but also for the teenage audience to engage with because young teenagers prefer rock and edgy music to classical, and it helps to describe the charecter that we are introduced to so similarly to enchanted the music used gives the audience's clues and a clear understanding of what going on.

Chasing Liberty (trailer)

Full movie;http://www.watch-movies-online.tv/movies/chasing_liberty/

Chasing Liberty is one of my favourite opening seqences for a romance movie, simply because of the fact it breaks the rules but in an effective way. It starts off with close ups of the charecters eyes then lips putting make up on then to a close up of her face before the camera pans from her feet to her face. This is extremely effective because we our instanstly drawn to this charecter straight away.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"American Girl"
Performed by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Written by Tom Petty
Published by Universal Music Publishing Ltd
Courtesy of Gone Gator Records

Once again the music played has a rock/edgy feel to it to engage to teenage audiences, and just like The Princess Diaries the song played is describing the charecter (protagonist) that we instantly see.

The camera then cutaway to a car driving across the road to a close up of where we are introduced to a male charecter pruning himself, we then cutback to the female charecter where it appears as she is getting ready for her date as we also hear her first line of dialogue 'Of course you may kiss me' we then have continuos cutaways from charecter to charecter showiong each of them getting ready for thier date. We then END with an ESTABLISHING SHOT which is unuasul as we usually start of with them of the location that the female charecter is in and the male charecter is approching.

Looking at these films I have found out that the music played can be used to describe the charecter or to give clues of what the narrative may be about so I will keep this in mind when looking for music. Also, looking at Chasing Liberty the opening seqeunce has similar elements that my groups opening sequence has such as the female charecter looking in the mirror etc, however to develop this we could start off by meeting our female charecter in a close up and gradually get further away as it worked well in Chasing liberty. We can also end in an establishing shot as she leaves after she encounters Ricardo, so we too would be breaking the rules but in an effective way.
Also, the cutaways between each charecter building suspence as they get closer and closer is very similar to what we have done.
The beggining bit we will keep the same.

The sites that I will use to find music;

http://freeplaymusic.com/

Picture storyboard

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449535728155450850" style="DISPLAY: block; class ( Located in the comment box underneath the previous opening sequence ) we adapted our opening sequence to improve it.

The opening sequence starts off with and ext. shots of Barking Abbey School (Leisure Centre) it then dissolves to a panning of inside the leisure centre (with extras) , which then pans across the basketball court, where we have a longshot of Ricardo dribbling a basketball .The camera continues to pan through the leisure centre (with extras) into the dance studio where we have a longshot of Alison gathering her dance things together after a session alone, she will pick up a CD and on that CD we will have a credit eg.editor. There is no dialogue just a sound track playing. We cutaway to Ricardo putting his duffle bag over his shoulder this will be a meduim long shot and on his duffle bag a credit will appear e.g directors name. The camera will follow Ricardo and as he opens the sports hall door we have a cutaway shot of Alison opening the door to the dance studio and walking out into the hall way going over her dance steps. We then cut back to Ricardo as he is walking up the stairs then through the hallway we have and over the shoulder shot of him seeing Alison. The over the shoulder shot will capture Alison turining around to see Ricardo behind her. We then cutaway to a close up of Alisons face looking embarrased. We will then have the camera inside the locker so as Alison opens her locker door we see her face, as she puts her things inside her locker it will eventually block the view of the camera. We then cutaway back to the over the shoulder shot of Ricardo and as he opens his locker, the camera will cutaway to a view from inside his locker where we will see Alison walking past with a lovestuck expression on her face. As he puts his belonging in his locker it will eventually block the view of the camera again and as he slams his locker door shut the title of the film will appear.

Location reece - The location will not be changed it will still be based in Barking Abbey Leisure centre.

Soundtrack - The soundtrack still needs to be decided by we have discussed that it will be soft gentle and mellow theme to it.

Font for opening titles - Italic and possibly pink or baby blue.

Script for opening sequence

Ext. SUNDAY THE 15th OF NOVEMBER. It was held at Esther's house at 12:15. Our first objective was to watch more teenage romance based films to inspire us with ideas, we watched the opening sequence of 'Love dont cost a thing', 'High school musical 1 2 and 3' and films such as 'Honey' and also 'Never been kissed'. After watching all these films we came to the conclusion that basing our opening sequence on the opening of High School Musical 2 will be a good idea. We liked the way the estbalishing shots were precise and set the scene clearly and we felt we could incorporate this into our opening sequence we also like the way they started the scenes in the classroom with the charecters bored waiting for time to go pass and that we could base our story around this opening.
In addition we dicussed and brainstormed different ideas such as locaton reece and music opening sequence. We also came up with the idea of doing additions for parts in our sequence. All in all it was a very sucessful meeting we discussed many issues and managed to storyboard our opening seqence and create a written version of it.

The Opening Sequence

The opening sequence starts off with and ext. shots of Barking Abbey School (Leisure Centre) it then dissolves to a panning of inside the leisure centre , which then pans across the basketball court, the dance studio then the hallway leading to the classroom. The use of establishing shots sets the scene of the film. (All the establising shots leading up until the classroom will be in black and white). We then have a meduim close up of Alison sitting in the classroom bored looking up at the clock which leads to the close up of the clock. Then music then fades out until you can just hear the clock ticking. We then cutaway to a close up of Alisons feet tapping to the beat of the clock. After a few minitues the bell goes and then the shots are in colour ( we chose for this scene to be in colour at this point to emphisise Alison coming alive after being bored in school for so many hours).
We have a longshot focusing on Alisons excitment leaving the classroom, then we have another longshot from a diagonal side view of Alison running through the corridor and Ricardo with his basketball team on the other side. They both bump into each other , there is a meduim shot of Ricoardo helping Alison pick up her stuff. Ricardos freinds hurring him up to leave and Ricardo forgets his ball , Alison kicks it and the camera follows the ball which then reveals the title scequence of the film.

Treatment 2nd Draft

Spotlight on me (New Title)

Treatment; The opening sequence starts off with Alison putting on her ballet shoes to cutaway shots of Ricardo putting on his football boots, it then goes to Alison walking through the corridor to the dance studio in the 6th form. It then cutsaway to Ricardo walking through the corridor hearing the music and peeking through the window to see Alison dancing.Ricardo is memorised by her dance moves and cant help himself so he walks in applauding her.

Alison is shocked as she has a huge crush on Ricardo because Ricardo is captain of the football team that everygirl loves, this is he first time he has ever noticed her, he goes on by saying that she is the most beautiful girl he has seen and he loves the way she moves. They continue to conversate and Alison asks him to come to the talent show, Ricardo says yes and plans to ask her out after the show.

Alison is performing with 3 other dancers for the show and they find out Ricardo is planning to ask her out after the show and are envious, but they think that if Alison perfoms badly he wont ask her out. So they come up with a plan to do a different dance routine to the one they are rehearsing with Alison without Alison knowing.

When it comes to the day of the talent show Ricardo has a front row seat and the girls get ready to perform. They come on stage and get resady to perform the stage goes dark and the spotlights are about to come on luckily for Alison her spotlight is the only on that comes on so the audience dont see the other 3 girls dancing, Once again Ricardo is mesmerised and when the music stops he runs on stage and asks her out.

Further research on teenage romance

Shot by Shot Analysis of 'Step Up'
View more presentations from guestb419e3.

She’s All that

She’s all that focuses on introducing the audience to the protagonist. This is shown through showing us the character in her element creating a piece of artwork. This tells us that she is a creative person. The costume that she wears is not very fashionable and is more casual suggesting that she is comfortable and doesn’t feel the need to dress up. The starting sequence is unconventional as it doesn’t start with various establishing shots, its starts off with a montage the director may have chose this as a reflection of what she was doing. The character was creating a collage which is a layering of different textures and images and a montage is a selection of shots layered and put together to emphasise passing of time and activity. The element of this opening I like most is the way the director introduced and focused on the protagonist and the type of character she represents.

Summer Catch

Summer Catch is similar to she’s all that in the sense that it introduces us to the main protagonist, each protagonist has a hobby which is made clear instantly through the use of establishing shots of the baseball field in Summer Catch. However in this case there is a narrative to help the audience understand the type of person the protagonist represents. This character is very driven by his hobbies and this is seen through the way he speaks and what he says ‘’ playing here is the chance of a lifetime’’. A convention that both opening sequences convey is the way the director introduces the protagonist doing either a hobby or being in the environment where the hobby takes place. The director also uses mis-en scene (costume) to represent the character so instantly we are aware and given clues of the type of people they are. In the case of Summer Catch the main character is wearing a vest with a baseball institution written on it.

Mad Love

Once again mad love highlights a character being shown doing something they are interested in hobby wise. We pick up clues about the narrative as the opening shows a male character watching a female character in excitement through a telescope. This happening in the first scene of the film highlights the genre which is teenage romance, it also gets the audience wondering if the two characters will end up meeting up or getting together and having the audience asking questions is a good way to get audience intrigued.

Feedback for treatment

During the lesson we presented our treatments to the class wre had to give out and take in feedback, here is the feedback my group recieved;

*The themes are clear and it is easy to see that the story is about romance however it is too extreme, teenage romances are often confortable to watch and nothing too dramatic happens however our story is full of murder and torture which is unlikely for teenage romance.

*The opening sequence jumps into the story too quickly and it needs to be broken down to not tell the story straight away.

*The ending does not make sence and the charecter has no motivation to kill herself

*The fact that Ricardo dates one of the bullies is irrelivant and should be changed.

*We need to watch more openings of teenage romance films and get more ideas before rewriting the pitch. However, it is only when they get into the song where they start to appeal to each other, the music used is about love so already it becomes clear that these two charecters will eventually fall in love. Another major clue is that just before they start singing the guy who hands them the microphone says 'one day you'le thank my for this'
indicating that he is the one responsible for bringing them together.

This meets my expectations for a romance film opening as the various clues used are key indicators of what the narrative will be and also the male protagonist used is the typical type of charecter that the females fall in love with, in this case it is the charecter Gabriella.

Get over it

Looking at the opening sequence of get over it, it is clear with the narrative that the film is a teenage romance, the upbeat and fast paced soundtrack gives the opening a jolly and possitive vibe for the audience to engage with which makes them feel happy. It starts off with video footage from the childhood of the two protagonists helping the audience see how these charecters have developed in relationship as time passes. I think meeting the protagonists within the opening sequence is a key element to have as the audience can automatically connect with these charecters before being introduced to anyone else. When the male charecter says ' someday, somehow, fate will bring us together'it is a major clue in what is likely to happen in the narrative of the film. This may leave the audience wanting to know what is going to happen and how they will end up getting back together.
This opening sequence meets my expectations of a teenage romance film opening as it has a possitive and happy vibe to the scene it is also based in a high school this is shown through various close ups of when the pair are kissing.

In the opening of What A Girl Wants there is a butterfly included in the title sequence, this will appeal automatically to female audiences. Similarly to 'Get Over It' there narrative rather than dialogue so using narative seems to be very popular in teenage romance films. Not only is using narative a regular occurance but directors leaving clues within the dialogue is also seen in 'What a girl wants' and words like 'Fate' are heard.' Little did she know that in the deserts of Morroco fate was waiting for her'. When the word fate is heard we are introduced to the male charecters letting the audience know that the coming of these two charecters was ment to be. As we are introduced to the male charecter the music gets slower and softer adding a romantic element to the scene.Similarly to 'Get Over It' and 'High School Musical' this meets my expectations of what and teen romance opening sequence should be as the audience are intoduce into a soft atmosphere with clues of two charecters falling in love visible throughout. Also the way in which both protagonists are introduced within the opening sequence adds to my expectations as I feel it is important to meet the main charecters straight away.

Research on chosen genre

In class we had to choose in our groups a genre that we may use for our film opening. My group chose ROMANCE

A romance film can be loosely defined as any film in which the central plot (the premise of the story) revolves around the romantic involvement of the story's protagonists. Common themes include the characters making decisions based on a newly-found romantic attraction.

The most successful romantic film is the 1997 blockbuster, Titanic which made over $600 million and $1.8 billion, worldwide.

The term Chick flick is often associated with romance films as many are targeted to a female audience.

Here is an analysis of the film 50 1st dates which is a film based on ROMANCE

50 FIRST DATES (ROMANCE)
View more presentations from guestb419e3.

Bridget Jone's diary

Bridget Jone's diary is another typical romance film,in the opening few scenes it is clear to see the protagonist as she tells the audience her own story like a diary, refering back to the main target audience for romance films (women) the portagonist in this film is a woman one of which the audience can relate to.
Clues of the narrative start to become apparent when she reaches the party badly dressed and her mother tells her she has to change, we can see that the protagonist has a low self esteem and this effects how other people react to her. This statment is proven when she confronts the man that she is being set up with, he instantly becomes alienated from her because of the way she is dressed and how she carries herself, you could even say this is the reason why she is still single and alone.
The charecters used in this film in particular I feel are the typical types of charecters used in romance films, and mother and daughter and a mothers friend and son with both mothers trying to get their children to date, with the children feeling reluctant to do so, having these types of charecters help the genre of the film apparent and it reaches my expectations of a typical love story as the protagonist is a single women looking for love.

The Notebook

The Notebook is a successfull romance film realeased in 2004, the opening however is very different to most romance openings. Rather than meeting the protagonsits straight away we meet other charecters in an old people's home who eventually go on to tell the love story. The opening titles show the camera panning over a typical romantic location, a river during its sunrise/set. However it does not make the movie apparent that it is about love although the music is very gentle and mellow it just gives the audeince a feeling of serenity and calmness.
It is only when the old man starts to read the story that we become aware of a guy called Noah who sees a girl he finds attrative. Narrative clue then start to show as we know Noah is trying to win this girls heart and the film will most likely be about how he does so.

More fairytales from around the world

Rumpelstiltskin
In order to make himself appear more important, a miller/commoner lied to the king that his daughter could spin straw into gold. The king called for the girl, shut her in a tower room with straw and a spinning wheel, and demanded that she spin the straw into gold by morning, for three nights, or be executed. She had given up all hope, when a dwarfish creature appeared in the room and spun straw into gold for her in return for her necklace; then again the following night for her ring. On the third night, when she had nothing with which to reward him, the strange creature spun straw into gold for a promise that the girl's first-born child would become his.

The king was so impressed that he married the miller's daughter, but when their first child was born, the dwarf returned to claim his payment: "Now give me what you promised". The queen was frightened and offered him all the wealth she had if she could keep the child. The dwarf refused but finally agreed to give up his claim to the child if the queen could guess his name in three days. At first she failed, but before the final night, her messenger discovered the dwarf's remote mountain cottage and, unseen, overhears the dwarf hopping about his fire and singing. While there are many variations in this song, the 1886 translation by Lucy Crane reads:

"To-day do I bake, to-morrow I brew,
The day after that the queen's child comes in;
And oh! I am glad that nobody knew
That the name I am called is Rumpelstiltskin!"[1]
When the dwarf came to the queen on the third day and she revealed his name, Rumpelstiltskin lost his bargain. In the 1812 edition of the Brothers Grimm tales, Rumpelstiltskin then "ran away angrily, and never came back". The ending was revised in a final 1857 edition to a more gruesome version where Rumpelstiltskin "in his rage drove his right foot so far into the ground that it sank in up to his waist; then in a passion he seized the left foot with both hands and tore himself in two." Other versions have Rumpelstiltskin driving his right foot so far into the ground that he creates a chasm and falls into it, never to be seen again. In the oral version originally collected by the brothers Grimm, Rumpelstiltskin flies out of the window on a cooking ladle (Heidi Anne Heiner).

Beauty and the Beast
A wealthy merchant lived in a mansion with his three daughters, all of whom were very beautiful, but only the youngest is named Belle (French for "beautiful," "La Belle" means "The Beautiful [person]") for being lovely and pure of heart. The merchant eventually loses all of his wealth in a tempest at sea, and he and his daughters must therefore live in a small farmhouse and work for their living. After some years of this, the merchant hears that one of the trade ships sent by himself had arrived in port, having escaped the destruction of its compatriots; therefore he returns to the city to discover whether it contains anything of monetary value. Before leaving, he asks his daughters whether they desire that he bring them any gift upon his return. His two elder daughters ask for jewelry and fine dresses, thinking that his wealth has returned; Belle is satisfied with the promise of a rose, as none grow in their part of the country. The merchant finds that his ship's cargo has been seized to pay his debts, leaving him without money by which to buy his daughters their presents.

During his return, he becomes lost in a forest. Seeking shelter, he enters a castle. He finds inside tables laden with food and drink, which have apparently been left for him by the castle's owner. The merchant accepts this gift and is about to leave when he sees a rose garden and recalls that Belle had desired a rose. Upon picking the most lovely rose he finds, the merchant is confronted by a hideous 'Beast', which tells him that for taking his (the Beast's) most precious possession after accepting his hospitality, the merchant must stay his prisoner forever. The merchant begs to be set free, arguing that he had only picked the rose as a gift for his youngest daughter. The Beast agrees to let him go only if the merchant will send his daughter to live in the castle in his place.

The merchant is upset, but accepts this condition. He tries, upon arriving home, to hide the secret from Belle; but she pries it from him and willingly goes to the Beast's castle. The Beast receives her graciously and treats her as his guest. He gives her lavish clothing and food and carries on lengthy conversations with her. Each night, the Beast asks Belle to marry him, only to be refused each time. After each refusal, Belle dreams of a handsome prince who pleads with her to answer why she keeps refusing him, and she replies that she cannot marry the prince because she loves him only as a friend. Belle does not make the connection between the handsome prince and the Beast and becomes convinced that the Beast is holding the prince captive somewhere in the castle. She searches for him and discovers multiple enchanted rooms, but of course, never the prince from her dreams.

For several months Belle lives a life of luxury at the Beast's palace, being waited on hand and foot by invisible servants, having no end of riches to amuse her and an endless supply of exquisite finery to wear. Yet eventually, she becomes homesick and begs the Beast to allow her to go to see her family. He allows it, if she will return exactly a week later. Belle agrees to this and sets off for home with an enchanted mirror and ring. The mirror allows her to see what is going on back at the Beast's castle, and the ring allows her to return to the castle in an instant when turned three times around her finger. Her older sisters are surprised to find her well fed and dressed in finery. They grow jealous of her happy life at the castle, and, hearing that she must return to the Beast on a certain day, beg her to stay another day, even putting onion in their eyes to make it appear as though they are weeping. It is their wish that the Beast will grow angry with Belle for breaking her promise and will eat her alive. Belle's heart is moved by her sisters' show of love, and she agrees to stay.

Belle begins to feel guilty about breaking her promise to the Beast and uses the mirror to see him back at the castle. She is horrified to discover that the Beast is lying half-dead of heartbreak near the rose bushes her father had stolen from and she immediately uses the ring to return to Beast.

By the time Belle finds the Beast he is already dead, and she weeps over him, saying that she loves him. When her tears strike him, the Beast comes back to life and is transformed into a handsome prince. The Prince informs Belle that long ago a fairy turned him into a hideous beast after he refused to let her in from the rain, and that only by finding true love, despite his ugliness, could he break the curse.

The Dove

A poor old woman had to beg hard to get a pot full of beans. A prince and his friends rode by and broke the pot in a game. She cursed him to fall in love with an ogress's daughter. Within hours, he became lost in a wood and lost his attendants, and found a girl mocking snails. He fell in love at sight, and the girl, Filadoro, also fell in love with him. He was too tongue-tied to woo, and the ogress caught him. He tried to strike her, but could not move. She ordered him to dig an acre of land and sow it by evening. Filadoro comforted him. When he heard she had magic, he asked why they could not leave; she answered a conjunction of the stars prevented it, but would go. When the ogress returned in the evening, calling Filadoro to throw down her hair so that she could climb it, the land was ready. The next day, she set him to split seven stacks of wood, and Filadoro did it again.

The third day, the ogress suspected Filadoro and set the prince to empty a cistern. Filadoro said that they must flee and dug a hole to an underground passage and they ran away. The prince did not want to bring her to his palace afoot and dressed this way, so he went to get suitable clothing and a carriage. The ogress cursed him to forget her as soon as he was kissed, and when he reached the castle, his mother kissed him. He could no longer explain what had happened to him, and agreed to marry as his mother wished

The Magicians Horse

A king's three sons went hunting, and the youngest got lost. He came to a great hall and ate there. Then he found an old man, who asked him who he was. He told how he had become lost and offered to enter his service. The old man set him to keep the stove lit, to fetch the firewood from the forest, and to take care of the black horse in the stables.

The man was a magician, and the fire was the source of his power, though he did not tell the prince.

One day, the prince nearly let the fire go out, and the old man stormed in. Frightened, the prince threw another log on it and nursed it back.

The horse told him to saddle and bridle it, to use an ointment that made his hair like gold, and to pile all the wood he could on the fire. This set the hall on fire. The horse then told him to take looking-glass, a brush and a riding-whip, and ride off on him. The magician chased on a roan horse, but the prince threw down the looking glass, the horse cut its feet on it, and the magician had to go back to put new shoes on him, but then he chased the prince again. The horse had the prince throw the brush on the ground. This produced a thick wood, and the magician had to go back and get an axe to cut through it, but then he chased the prince again. The prince threw down the whip; it became a river, and when the magician tried to cross it, it put out his magical fire and killed him.

The horse told the prince to strike the ground with a willow wand. A door opened, making a hall in which the horse stayed, but he sent the prince through the fields to take service with a king. He wore a scarf to hide his golden hair. He worked as a gardener and every day brought half his food to the horse.

One day, the horse told him that the king's three daughters would chose their husbands: a great company of lords would gather, and they would throw their diamond apples into the air. The man at whose feet the apple stopped would be the bridegroom. He should be in the garden, nearby, and the youngest's would roll to him; he should take it up at once.

He did. The scarf slipped a little, the princess saw his hair and fell in love at once, and the king, though reluctant, let them marry.

Soon after, the king had to go to war. He gave the prince a broken-down nag. The prince went to the black horse; it gave him arms and armor, and he rode it to battle and won the battle, but fled before he could be clearly seen. Twice more, he went to war, but the third time, he was wounded, and the king bound his wound with his own handkerchief. The princess his wife recognized it and revealed it to her father. There was great rejoicing, and the king gave him half his kingdom.

Story

The True Bride (Research of a fairytale from around the world)
View more presentations from guestb419e3.

Pain and Love ( My adapted version of the fairytale )

Thump, was the sound that elevated through the hallway as Alison’s mother pushed her against the wall. Alison was a beautiful 16 year old girl who had aspirations to one day become a model and work for a fashion magazine, she was 5`10 with long blonde hair and dazzling blue eyes, some would say her mother was envious of this, so rather that being proud of what she had created she would find any excuse to beat taunt and torment her. Alison lived alone with her mother as her father passed away when she was 13, all her family lived in America so it was just Alison and her mum.But there was one person Alison could turn to, his name was David, David lived next door, he was 17 and had a very close relationship with her, despite living next door they could call each other up and speak for hours on end about everything and anything, David was also attractive and eventually they started dating, but Alison knew if her mum was ever to find out she would be very angry and once again resort to beating her.One day Alison’s evil cousin Beatrice came over from America to spend the week with her auntie, as Beatrice walked up the driveway towards the front door she caught a glimpse of David, she was bedazzled by his handsomeness. Unfortunately for Alison Beatrice did not like her so one day when she was at fashion school Beatrice went searching through her room and found a photo album, it had the only pictures of her father she owned and Towards the end of the album was a series of pictures taken in a photo booth of Alison and David hugging and kissing. Jealousy and hatred filled Beatrices eyes and she did not hesitate to tell her auntie.Alison mum was infuriated. The minute Alison walked through the door Alison’s mother started punching her beautiful face, Alison started to scream, David heard the screams next door and knew what was going on, he tried to block out the sounds but the more her tried the louder they appeared , he couldn’t take no more , he ran to Alison’s front door and it was still open, as he walked through the hallway he witnessed Alison’s mum scratch through Alison’s skin, the teardrops rolling down Alison’s face was disguised by the blood which now overpowered over her cheek . Alison’s mum had always hit her in the past but even Alison’s mum knew she had gone too far.She immediately ran out the front door, just as she started going through the driveway she was stopped by a 3 men in suits and a police officer, David had called the social services, Alison’s mum was instantly arrested. After and hour Alison got the chance to clean up and pack her bags, even after an hour it was clear the scratch that her mother had given was going to leave a permanent scar across her face. By this time the social services was ready to take Alison into a care home, David was in tears and did not realise the seriousness the phone call he made. He asked to speak to Alison alone.‘Alison, I’m sorry and I love you’ David sharedShe replied ‘Its ok, I love you too and one day I was us to get married and be together forever,Take this ring, it was my fathers. Keep hold of this and one day when I come back and find you can propose to me with this ring and we can be together’ he started in her eyes for a few seconds , placed his hands across her face where the scar was and said ‘Ok’. Little did they know that Beatrice was in the next room and heard every word.Alison was then taken away, David went home, and Beatrice got escorted to the airport. When Beatrice arrived to America she told her 3 other evil sisters of the proposition David and Alison made, Beatrice wanted to do everything in her power to ensure Alison would not marry David, but she knew she had to wait some time before making her move.2 years later Beatrice’s 3 sisters helps make her over to look like Alison, Beatrice then flew back to England to where David lived. As she approached the driveway David was looking out the window, he could not believe his luck as he saw this beautiful blonde girl approaching his doorstep, he thought it was Allison and could not contain his excitement and ran to the front door.‘I’m back, I came back like I promised I missed you have you got the ring?’‘yes yes I do’ , as David got down on one knee and stared into Beatrice’s eyes he didn’t feel the connection he had once felt, but her thought it was because of the time they had spent apart with no contact. Just then a black car was parking up in to the driveway next door where Alison once lived, a blonde girl then came out the car, and she instantly recognised Beatrice and knew what had happened. ‘Beatrice how could you, you ruined my life and you came back to ruin it some more, David it’s me Alison!’ David was confused and didn’t know what to do; he den noticed the scar and then recognised Alison.‘Alison, it’s really you!’ He then proposed and one year later they got married. Beatrice flew back to America and was never to be seen again.

200 WORD TREATMENT

Pain and love

Alison is a 16 year old girl who lives alone with her mother who abuses her, she falls in love the boy next door called David and they peruse a relationship in secret. Alison’s evil cousin comes to live with them and likes David too, she then finds out he is dating Alison and due to jealously tell Alison’s mother, which results to her beating her to the point where she leaves a scar on her face, her mother feels guilty and tries to run away, but by then its too late as David has called social services. Alison’s mother gets arrested and Alison gets taken into care. I worked with Esther and Yasmine. Yasmine operated the camera whilst Esther and I were the characters .Due to the lack of time we thought of one idea and went with it. The idea was to have one character being followed and eventually attacked at the end of the scene. When it came to planning Esther created the storyboard using a number of shots such as close ups and long shots whilst I labelled the shots and Yasmine set up the camera, I felt this was good time management and being able to share the work load is vital when you do not have long to complete a task.
When it came to filming; the storyboard played a huge part in keeping things organised as we had no time to rethink ideas we went with what we had drawn. In some sense this can be seen as a good thing because the storyboard is the foundation for the film; however it can also be seen as a negative thing because sometimes a few minor changes can make a big difference to improving a scene. Yasmine directed both Esther and I well and I believe she played a good role as director and having her stern directions was key when it came to us completing the scene.
Although we completed the filming we did face a few a problems, when it came to finding a location, we couldn’t decide the best place to film the scene and wasted a good 5 minutes trying to figure out the best place to shoot, in the end we shot outside the classroom although other class members were filming in this area. Filling in the continuity sheets was another issue for us as we were so rushed for time, we tried our best to keep filling them in between filming of the shots, but as time started to run out we had to leave the continuity sheets and film the remaining shots and fill out the sheet afterwards, this can be a disadvantage if not every scene is remembered and written down. Overall it was a constructive task which I personally felt helped me see what can be produced in a short amount of time and help emphasise the importance of planning and having a clear structure before filming.

How is it that anyone can become a filmaker?

How Is It That Anyone Can Become A Film Maker[1]
View more presentations Explain how you organised your time and schedules. What issues came up with time management? What problems did you come up against? How did you deal with these? What were your strengths and weaknesses in this area? What would you do differently next time?

For the preliminary task which consisted of filming a short scene of a character walking through a door and having a conversation with another character I worked with Rachel, there were various tasks that we had to carry out for pre production such as writing the script, drawing the storyboard & creating the filming schedule. Due to the fact that preproduction was about us coming as a unit and forming ideas together we mainly did the storyboard and script together, however when it came to creating the filming schedule there were a few minor issues. Due to the fact there was not enough lesson time we had to take it upon ourselves to do the schedule at home, none of us had done a filming schedule in the past so we decided to both give it a go doing separate ones at home and then choosing the better one the next day in class, but later on we realised that their was only one copy of the storyboard which I had, so I had to create the shooting schedule alone, therefore in the end we only had one shooting schedule to choose from. However it was a very good shooting schedule which Rachel and I felt was good enough to work with. In future for this not to happen again we will have a copy of the script and story board photocopied to enable backup just encase it gets lost and just so each of us can have a copy to refer to if we need it for anything.
During production there were more tasks to do such a working and setting up the camera, calling every shot with the clapper boards and also directing the cast and keeping them informed in what they had to do, each of these tasks were important and required a lot of detail and thought so rather than working together we shared the work load, we both set up the camera and the tracks however I operated the camera for all the shots whilst Rachel called all the shots, when it came to directing the cast, we both unconsciously took turns to direct them as there we some scenes Rachel envisioned a certain way and others I envisioned a different way but together they worked well, it was also better for the cast so they didn’t feel like they had one person bossing them about and it felt more like a team effort rather than a task.
In addition to the envisioning of scenes Rachel and I struggled to draw the scenes in the way we wanted them done, so our final product will differ from how it is on the storyboard. On the other hand Rachel and I knew want we wanted so their was no problems when it came to filming and how we wanted it done, although the scenes are not identical as how they look on the storyboard we feel it is better this way as drawing images is a completely different concept from doing them practically and also you come across issues that you don’t come across when doing them on paper, we felt that the issues we faced and the way we resolved them was the key to having a successful film piece rather than having everything go to plan as change can mean improvement. When there is no change there is no improvement.

2) How did you plan your sequence? What process did you use?

To plan our sequence we used the process of storyboarding and script writing.
We started off with an idea in mind and interpreted it into pictures. Our idea was to have a character running late to her P.E lesson and having a teacher waiting impatiently, and then during the confrontation the pupil reveals she has not got her kit. This makes the teacher very angry issuing the girl with a detention. It is a very simple story line however when it came to drawing on the storyboard we wanted it to be filmed in a way it would create an impact even though it was a simple idea e.g. rather than just having a scene that flowed we decided to have cutaway shots, having this would enable use to create an atmosphere within the scene and make it more appealing for the audience whilst watching.
When writing the script we took into account the shortness of the piece therefore we made the script very short leaving the characters with the max of three lines each.

3) What technology did you use to complete the task, and how did you use it? What did you learn about using the cameras? Here you can also refer to the discussions we have had in class recently about digital cameras.

The camera was the main technology we used during the prelim task we had to be very careful with the camera and set them up correctly as us not doing so could had cause use problems whilst filming. ……. (not sure)

4) What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?

There were many factors we had to take into account whilst planning and shooting such as, the length of our sequence we had to ensure that our sequence was no longer than 30 seconds it had to be short and effective, so whilst planning and creating the storyboard we had to limit the amount of shots and keep the storyline short, keeping into account the 180 degree rule, which consist of keeping the camera at one side of the characters on screen and always referring back to that same side. Keeping to the 180 degree rule kept the flow and continuity to our scene which is vital as us not doing this could lead to us losing marks. J just as important as continuity is having the correct spirit level on the camera. The spirit level enables us to see if the camera is level we had to continuously keep checking this as if the bubble was not exactly in the centre it would have meant that we were recording at a tilt. Shot reverse shot was another aspect we had to incorporate into our sequence, we used it mainly during conversation e.g. shooting from over the shoulder of one character then reversing it to the shoulder of the other character.
Whilst editing we had to take into account the fact that the scenes needed to link together well, to ensure this would happen we had to cut and set in/out points in the correct places. I n addition we had to capturise the correct scenes and assemble in the most effective way. Even when we thought we had finished we had to keep checking and triming until our final product was of its highest standard. The biggest challenge for me was knowing when to stop editing, due to the constant replaying of our scene i started being tempermental picking up on unnessary faults thinking they needed changing, When all in all our scene was complete and looked the way it needed to look.

5) How successful was your sequence? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently?

I feel our sequence worked really well , it flowed well, the storyline is clear to understand, the action reaction shots were really effective and we kept to all the rules we needed to keep such as the 180 degree rule. However towards the end of filiming the quality of shots filmed were not of the highest standard as the shots at the beggining of the scene, this resulted to us not being able to use all the shots I take full responsiblity of this as i was the person in charge of the camera in future to this not to happen I will try and be more patient and keep an image of what I want the final product to look like to keep me motivated whilst filming even when I get tired and agitated, in hindsight although we had this problem we managed to edit in such an efficient way that our sequence made the impact and got the message across that these deleted shots were not nessesary.

Right at the start of our sequence we have Esma running into the sports hall, we used a range of shots such as close ups and longs shots, when it came to editing we linked all these shots together cutting and setting in/out points in all the right places, and it ended up looking like one shot, I was amazed by how good it looked! We have Thelma saying detention midway though the sequence we added a zoom effect and slowed down the tone of her voice at first it sounded silly but we played it again a couple of times and came to the conclusion that it worked really well so we kept it.

All in all I am very pleased with the sequence we created, I have learnt that the higher standard of filming results to and easier editing process which results to having a good piece of work in the end.

6) What have you learnt from completing the task? Discuss time management skills, group work skills, organisational skills and technical skills of production.

During this whole process I learnt that team/ group work skills are vital when in comes to working with other people you have to be willing to compromise, share and put together ideas in order to end up a with a successful result. Problems will always arise but it is about how you solve them which makes the impact in the end.
When time is limited it is important to organise and share the work load efficiently trying not to spend to much time on one thing and not enough on another e.g., writing the script should take just as long as creating a shooting schedule. Being adaptable to situations is also important as things my not always work as how you wrote them on paper.
Being open minded especially when working in groups will help as each group member is an individual and each individual has different ideas, thoughts and beliefs, also being willing to learn is key, as one person may know something or understand it better than another it is down to you to humble yourself and take in that information not just for the task but to better your skills for future reference.
When you have a vision of how you see a certain scene it is down to you to take charge and enforce your vision upon those you are working with mainly the cast so your end product can be as effective as you want it to be.
You have to be considerate for your partner as a good working relationship is the foundation for creating a good piece of work in a pair, and lastly I learnt that filmmaking is not an easy process and it is not as glamorous as people think it is.

7) Post production - What did you learn about the editing process? How did you make decisions while editing? How did you plan your time to complete the editing task? What were your strengths and weaknesses in this area? What would you do differently next time?

The whole editing process was a new experience for me, I learnt that it consists of digitalizing shots, then assembling shots & then adding effects. When working with Rachel we had a good partnership we both knew what we wanted the outcume to look like so when it came to making decisions there was nothing Rachel wanted that I didnt agree with, vice versa. There were problems I spotted that Rachel didnt notice and there were issues Rachel noticed that I didnt see which we had to address, I believe thats what makes good teamwork during the course of the editing process, being able to rely on each other for constuctive feedback and critism. We did come across a problem during our first day of editing, we couldnt degitalise our shots and spent a whole lesson trying to do so, but it was a technical problem we could do nothing about. So, we took it upon ourselves to come back after school and catch up because the rest of the class was ahead of us. We ended up getting so into the task that ended up being ahead of everyone else and finsihed editing a whole day before the deadline. During the editing process I dont think there would be anything we could do better in future but now we have learnt and grapsed the concept of editing it will be a quicker proccess next time. However to get the best sequence we could film better to make the editing easier for ourselves eg. we can film a wider range of shots so we can have a large selcetion to chose from when editing, this will enable us to compare and choose what suits us best.

Overall it was a very sucessfull task and personally I was pleased to work with Rachel, we are both hardworking and focused students, this worked in our favour as the task we completed together was of a high standard. We made mistakes but most importantly we will learn from them to better our knowledge for future reference.

I have enjoyed doing this prelim task but it is only a fraction of what I can achieve and now that I have learnt all there is to know I hope that in the next task I can surpass my own exspectations and create something outstanding.

Preliminary task - Shooting schedule (click to enlarge)

Preliminary Task - Script

Scene 1

Ext.
